Rhythm Wands are super fun.  Who doesn’t like twirling them around while dancing or listening to music? You can make these with your students and use them in multiple ways to teach literacy, mathematics and science.  Here is how you can make them.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Tape, Chopsticks and receipt paper, tape, scissors.

DURATION OF ACTIVITY

Rhythm Wands: 35 minutes- 50 minutes

INTRODUCTION: Having students invest in the time it takes to make their own musical tools means that they take ownership over their musical career.  As fun as it is, it also teaches a valuable lesson in craftsmanship, creativity, and trial and error!

ACTIVITY:  Streamers

Take a section of receipt paper that is about 4 -5 five feet in length.

Have students decorate the receipt paper by drawing musical images or a theme from a book you may be working on in class.  Tape the edge of the paper to the chopstick and coil up. This is a great tool for playing games like “freeze dance” or dancing to music as student now have a “prop” to use.

Tell us in the comments below how you use Rhythm Wands in your classroom!
