How to Make Boom Whackers

May 3, 2017 Alyson Swihart

There are so many things you can do with Boom Whakers. They are a great way to teach rhythm, patterns, compositions, color recognition, sentence structure etc.  Don't want to pay for them?  Well, you can make them yourselves (or with your students) and turn it into a measurement and pitch lesson!

Materials:  fluorescent light shield tubes – 8 feet long, 2 inches wide.

Where: Home Depot - $3-5 per tube

How many: Two Tubes will make one complete set!

If you have a slightly jagged edge that is ok – use colored duct tape or regular duct tape to wrap around the edges.

Note Length (cm)

C 62.7

D 55.6

E 49.2

F 46.3

G 40.9

A 36.1

B 32.3

C 30.2

D 26.3

E 23.0

This will give you boomwhackers for the C Major scale:

Now, use your boomwhakers to play: “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Click on the button to download Mary Had A Little Lamb to use with your projector or as a poster!
